Behold: the Key to the Bastille, as it appears today hanging on the wall at Mount Vernon, George Washington’s Virginia estate.
Heavily inspired by the ideals of the American Revolution, the French Revolution began with the storming of the Bastille in 1789. The Bastille, a prison which had long been considered an emblem of monarchical tyranny, fell to the mob, and the key to the prison was given to none other than the Marquis de Lafayette. He, in turn, presented the wrought-iron key to George Washington as a symbol of liberty, and as a testament to their decade-long friendship.
