This woodcut, made by German artist Albrecht Dürer in 1515, is one of the most famous depictions of a rhinoceros ever created. Dürer created this work based solely on descriptions and a sketch of a rhinoceros--he himself had never seen one. Upon close inspection, one can see the differences between this armored creature and the real thing. (For example, Dürer's rhinoceros has a horn on its back.) Nonetheless, this woodcut was reproduced on a mass scale, becoming the only representation of a rhinoceros most Europeans had ever seen, until Clara's tour in the mid-1700s.
